WUNDT (Theodor). Wanderbilder aus den Dolomiten. Stuttgart, Deutsche Verlag-Anstalt, 1894. Large folio, bound in half cloth with corners, boards illustrated in colour, protected by a brown paper dust jacket with title page pasted on (publisher's binding). First edition, illustrated with a frontispiece, 16 plates (8 in colour) and 19 illustrations in the text. This impressive portfolio presents some of Wundt's ascents in the Dolomites, based on his own photographs. The text provides explanations for the sixteen large-format plates, which show views of Monte Cristallo, Cimone della Pala, Croda la Lago, Sorapiss, Tofana, Lake Misurina, etc.
Rare copy with dust jacket. Some wear to dust jacket, otherwise in excellent condition.
Theodor Wundt (1858 - Munich 1929) had a brilliant military career (he became a General), but is best known as a mountaineer and photographer. He climbed in the Alps, mainly in the Dolomites, but also in the Pennine Alps (Matterhorn) and the Bernese Alps (Jungfrau). He was a pioneer of winter climbing, first in the Tatras, then in the Dolomites, the Tofane and the Tre Cime di Lavaredo. He didn't hesitate to carry his cumbersome photographic equipment up difficult routes in summer and winter alike, providing us with some spectacular climbing scenes. His climbing companions included Jeanne Immink (1853 - 1929), one of the first women to take up sport climbing.
A magnificent and unusual work.
