In-folio, bound in half basane with corners set with gilt fillets and scrolls, spine ribbed and decorated with gilt fillets and fleurons, title page on spine (modern binding). A copy with the engravings before the letter of the considerably enlarged second edition, produced under the direction of Rodolphe Hentzi. Illustrated with an allegorical frontispiece, a bandeau view at the head of the text by Dunker, and 42 plates (instead of 40 for this edition), engraved in the black manner by Descourtis and Janinet after Caspar Wolf, Abraham Wagner, Friedrich Rosenberg... and magnificently illuminated: the colours here are much better than in ordinary copies. The captions are written in pencil in the margins. Several plates are signed on the verso by Hantzi. Jacob Samuel Wyttenbach (Bern 1748 - 1830) was a Bernese pastor and naturalist, and one of the best experts on the central Alps. The author of a guide to the Oberland, he advised Goethe on his trip to Switzerland in 1779, translated Saussure and Deluc into German and annotated Besson. He also contributed to the works of A. de Haller. Caspar Wolf (1735 - 1783) was a Swiss landscape painter, famous for his realistic yet highly artistic views of the Alps. The first edition of the work appeared in 1778 with the ten plates by Caspar Wolf, reproduced in the 1785 edition, depicting the Bernese Alps.
