The herdsman turns to look at the viewer, as does a sheep next to him in the background. Philipp Peter Roos, known as Rosa da Tivoli (1657-1706), was a pupil of Giacinto Brandi and settled in Tivoli, portraying the Roman countryside with intense brushstrokes and a strong contrast between light and shadow.
