Shepherd with goats and sheep grazing,
oil on canvas, 48.5x64.5 cm; with frame 54.5x70 cm
In a rural landscape enlivened by water and surrounded by mountains, a goat grazes some leaves, and another, right in the centre of the scene, rests crouched; from the right edge of the scene appears a herdsman with his dog (whose muzzle we only glimpse). The herdsman turns to look at the viewer, as does a sheep next to him in the background.
Philipp Peter Roos, known as Rosa da Tivoli (1657-1706), was a pupil of Giacinto Brandi and settled in Tivoli, portraying the Roman countryside with intense brushstrokes and a strong contrast between light and shadow.
