Lot no. 264
17th century Technique: oil on canvas Dimensions: 73x58.5 cm; with frame 107x91 cm 12660 Justus Sustermans Portrait of Count Anton Clemente Mazzoni, oil on canvas, 73x58.5 cm; with frame 107x91 cm The attribution to the Antwerp painter - who arrived in Florence under the patronage of the Medici family - is confirmed by historical references to this and another painting at auction. At the time of the painting, the Mazzoni family governed the County of Urbech, today Papiano-Stia, in the province of Arezzo. Having obtained investiture by Alessandro de' Medici in 1532, the Mazzoni family remained counts of Urbech until 1747. The character depicted in the painting is Count Anton Clemente (1654-1679), son of Pietro Mazzoni and Margherita di Matteo Frescobaldi. Pietro, widowed, married in his second marriage to Frescobaldi by whom he had six children. Justus Susterman, who lived in Florence at Villa Giovannelli at the time, portrayed his father, mother and brother Clement in addition to him. Leader Scott in his work 'Vincigliata and Maiano', printed in Florence in 1891 for the types of Barbera, reports verbatim: 'these portraits and those of two of the sons of Count d'Urbech are all fine paintings by Sustermans; they are represented in red lucco and point lace, and are very fine portraits' (p. 226). In another volume on Maiano, the same author - in his description of the paintings hanging in the Mazzoni family villa - states that they were "by the hand of the celebrated painter Giusto Sustermans d'Anversa". The list of Sustermann's paintings in the Mazzoni residence also includes portraits of his mother, father and brother Clement. Valuable 17th-century box frame, finely carved and gilded, with a dark background, surmounted by sculpted elements in relief. Above, in the centre, is the heraldic relief insignia of the Counts of Urbech with a rampant lion on a blue background on its left side and a golden triangle on a red background on its right (an identical design of the coat of arms is conserved in the State Archives of Florence, Comuni soggetti fund, no. 901 c. 2r). At the sides of the frame, panoplies and at the corners brown armorial bearings surmounting panoplies. Bibliography: M.
