YURI KHYMYCH (1928-2003) Church of Fyodor Stratilatus. Novgorod, 1960s gouache on paper 42 x 61 cm Yuri Ivanovych Khymych was a Soviet and Ukrainian architect, graphic artist and outstanding master of architectural landscape painting. Trained as an architect, his art focused on traditional and historical architecture, including churches, monasteries, cityscapes and landscapes. Born in Kamianets-Podilskyi and later settled in Kiev, he was an honoured artist and architect of Ukraine, a member of the National Union of Architects of Ukraine (since 1955) and the National Union of Artists of Ukraine (since 1962). In the late 1950s, Khymych was recognised by art historians as one of the best watercolourists in the USSR. In 1990, he was awarded the title of Honoured Artist of the Ukrainian SSR and made an honorary member of the Ukrainian Academy of Architecture.
