ZACARIAS GONZALEZ VELAZQUEZ (attr. to)
(Madrid, 1763 - 1834)
Immaculate
Oil on copper, 66X51.5 cm
Son of the painter Antonio González Velázquez, he began his artistic training at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando directed by his father, and was a pupil of Mariano Salvador Maella. He painted several frescoes with allegorical and mythological scenes in the rooms of the Royal Palace of El Pardo and the Royal Palace of Madrid and paintings of religious subjects for the Cathedral of Jaén, the Cathedral of Toledo and the Oratorio de Caballero de Gracia in Madrid. For the Royal Tapices Factory he made cartoons for frescoes with marine scenes from sketches by Maella. From 1828 he was appointed director of the Academy. Zacarías thus continued the family tradition, frescoing domes and executing large compositions; he was also an appreciated portraitist and has left us excellent essays.
