Günther Uecker
Uecker in Vienna. 1992. drawing and relief print with graphite and ash on wove paper. 43 x 20.5 cm. With incised signature and dated as well as signed and dated in pencil verso. Mounted on support in the upper edge. Laid in original linen portfolio with accompanying publication of the same name. - The cassette somewhat dusty, the spine slightly discoloured. The work in very good condition. Splendidly strong relief printing with uniquely structured reworking in graphite and ash.
One of only 15 unique copies. - The work was published in connection with the catalogue of the same name, which accompanied the exhibitions in the Museum moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien with early paintings in the Palais Lichtenstein and pictures, sculptures and objects in the Museum des 20. Jahrhunderts from 10.07.-20-.09.1992. - Ed. Edition Cantz, Stuttgart. - In response to the Chernobyl reactor disaster on 26 April 1986, Uecker created his first ash paintings in the context of memory, loss and new beginnings. In these works, ash becomes not only a material, but also a carrier of collective memory. The rough, fragile surface of the works lends them a quiet urgency, speaking of transience and destruction as well as spiritual renewal. The materiality itself becomes a carrier of meaning - its brittle, fragile structure lends the pictures a physical presence that directly confronts the viewer: with the fragility of human existence, the burden of history and the possibility of drawing new meaning from the ashes.

Edition Cantz, Stuttgart. - As a reaction to the Chernobyl nuclear disaster on 26 April 1986, Uecker created his first ash paintings in the context of memory, loss and new beginnings. In these works, the ashes are not only a material, but also a carrier of collective memory. The rough, fragile surface of the artworks lends them a quiet intensity, speaking of transience and destruction as well as spiritual renewal. The materiality itself becomes a medium of expression - its brittle, fragile structure adds a physical presence to the works that directly confronts the viewer: with the fragility of human existence, the burden of history and the possibility of drawing new meaning from the ashes.
