Lot no. 46
ZERO Herbert Zangs Crease folding. 1978. folded aluminium paper on wove paper. 7 x 14 cm (35 x 35.5 cm). Signed and dated. - Sheet delicately brownstained in places, also verso. Isolated minor and barely noticeable creases and margins partly slightly irregular. Otherwise very good with reduced composition, the fold concisely with structured grid. Provenance: Donated by the artist to the current owner. - We would like to thank Mrs Helgard Müller-Jensen for kindly confirming the authenticity. - A central chapter in Herbert Zangs' oeuvre is formed by the so-called "Knickfaltungen" (folds), which were created primarily in the late 1970s, such as the present work. Folds and creases create a grid-like structure, which in turn exemplifies Zangs' interest in serial order and its deliberate disruption. The grid and relief structures created by folding and deforming not only have an aesthetic effect, but also convey a critical attitude towards standardised patterns of thought, social conformity and ultimately a mental torpor, which Zangs counters with a vital, spontaneous gesture with his folds.
