Rupprecht Geiger
Untitled. 1962. Colour silkscreen on wove paper. 51 x 39 cm (59.5 x 42 cm). Signed, numbered and inscribed "Probeblatt". Mounted under passepartout in places. - Sheet slightly browned and partially somewhat creased, partly with fine colour break in the motif. Some small stains in places, also verso. Here with remnants of earlier mounting. Overall good with splendid impression, the colour chalky and fresh.
Geiger 44/6 - One of 5 proofs for one sheet of the six-part portfolio "AER", contrary to Geiger still as portrait format. - Early proof by Rupprecht Geiger, which takes up essential features of his pictorial thinking. The serigraph shows a blue circle - a central motif in Geiger's work, which for him was less a geometric form than a carrier of energy and spatial effect. In combination with black and grey elements, an exciting composition is created in which Geiger's search for a pure, abstract colour form is already clearly evident. While Geiger is primarily associated with bright red and orange tones in the late 1960s, this early print documents an experimental phase in which contrasts and structural balance take centre stage. The restrained, almost meditative colours and the emphatically open character of the proof make it an interesting testimony to his creative development.
