(Bound by C. Smith). First illustrated edition of this tourist guide to France, a sort of Green Guide before its time, published by the German jurist Justus Zinzerling (c. 1590-1620), known as Jodocus Sincerus. The first edition appeared in 1616 in Lyon, where the author worked as a proofreader in a printing house. This attractive Dutch edition is notable for its engraved intaglio illustration, comprising a title-frontispiece by Jacob van Meurs and 22 fold-out views of French towns - Nancy, Sedan, Paris, Orléans, Moulins-Engilbert, Nantes, La Rochelle, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Montpellier, Marseille, Orange, Lyon, Rouen, Amiens, Calais - as well as London, Antwerp, Rotterdam, Leiden, Amsterdam and Geneva.
A very fine and finely established copy.
From the libraries of Samuel Ashton Thompson-Yates, Cecil Thompson and Austin Smith, with bookplates.
