Charpentier, 1884; small square in-8 of [4]-379-[1] pp, olive morocco, four gilt fillets framing the boards, spine ribbed richly decorated and mosaiced with red roses, sand morocco lining decorated with gilt fillets and roulette with rose branches mosaiced in red at the corners, red and white silk endpapers embroidered with floral motifs, double endpapers of paper tourniquet, gilt edges on witnesses, cover and spine, olive morocco spine folder with flaps (Marius Michel). First edition. One of 100 numbered copies on Hollande laid paper (n°53). A unique copy, with an etching portrait by Albert Duvivier countersigned in pencil and 101 original pen-and-ink drawings and washes signed with the initials E[vert].v[an].M[uyden] in the margins throughout. A highly talented Swiss painter, Evert Van Muyden (1853-1922) attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Geneva, then studied under Carl Steffeck in Berlin and Gérôme in Paris. From 1895 onwards, he turned resolutely towards engraving. The Musée des Beaux-Arts in Geneva currently holds a large collection of his work.
