Johann Daniel Wilhelm Hartmann (1793 - 1862) was a Swiss painter, engraver and painter-acologist. He learnt painting in particular from his father Georg Leonhard Hartmann, who was also a painter. He later worked in St. Gallen, particularly as a painter of natural history and miniatures. In 1844, his notes on "Erd- und Süsswasser-Gasteropoden der Schweiz, mit Zugabe einiger merkwürdigen exotischen Arten" were published by Scheitlin and Zollikofer in St. Gallen. Hartmann was court painter to Prince Maximilian zu Wied, who himself was active as a zoologist and ethnologist, undertook numerous research trips and maintained extensive scientific collections. - Inscription by another hand in pencil verso and on support, minimally stained. Overall in very good condition.
