Zoology - Africa Lankester, E. Ray On Okapia, a new Genus of Giraffidae, from Central Africa. With 3 plates, one coloured. London, 1902. 279-314 pp. 4°. Without binding. From: Transactions of the Zoological Society of London. Vol. XVI. Part VI.1. (see Nissen ZBI, 4788.) - Important first treatise by Sir Edwin Ray Lankester on the okapi, which was being researched for the first time at the time. He received the skin and two skulls, which were handed over to Henry Hamilton Johnston during a research trip. The latter had already ruled out the possibility that the remains were not a horse-like animal but a new species. After a thorough investigation, Lankester then introduced the new genus of okapia. - Bound sheet of leaves, probably removed from brochure. Slight handling marks. Margins browned and partly foxed.
