Zoology - Entomology Aldrovandi, Ulisse De animalibus insectis libri septem, cum singulorum iconibus ad vivum expressis. With engraved allegorical title, engraved portrait and 126 (23 full-page) woodcuts. Last leaf with colophon. Bologna, Bellagamba, 1602. folio. 6 vols, 767 pp. 22 pp. Central hardcover with cover fillet and rich reredos and title (somewhat rubbed and scuffed, inconspicuously restored). Historia animalium. - Rare first edition. - Nissen, ZBI 66 - Horn-Schenkling 126 - Smith, History of Entomology, p. 85: "The first literary work that deals with insects and thus finally establishes entomology, especially systematic entomology, as a science". - The "Historia animalium" consists of a total of eleven volumes. Alongside the "Ornithologa", the insect volume is the only one of Aldrovandi's major zoological works that was published during his lifetime and remained free of additions and changes made by later editors. In a total of seven books with approx. 720 figures, entomology is treated in detail with descriptions of bees, butterflies, beetles, spiders, worms, snails, starfish, etc. - Title page slightly stained in lower margin, last few pages with faint lateral dampstain.
