He began his professional career as a teacher and associate professor in Regensburg. However, he began his scientific career in 1762 when he wrote a work on the mycology of Bavaria. This was followed by further works on ornithology and entomology, including the present work. He set up a personal cabinet of curiosities, the Schaefferianum Museum, which was even visited by Goethe on his way to Italy. - Slightly stained, margins slightly browned, overall very well-preserved copy with plates in strong colouring.
