The Brunswick-born zoologist, palaeontologist and natural scientist was curator of the Australian Museum in Sydney and is regarded as one of Australia's most famous naturalists. He was in contact with his contemporary Charles Darwin and a keen advocate of his theory of evolution. - The twelve splendid lithographs by Helena Forde and Harriet Scott show the various snakes of the Australian continent. - Margins browned, title page minimally stained, some minimal foxing.
