Zoologische Buchillustration, 3829 (copy without errata leaf) - Sallander, H. Bibliotheca Walleriana, vol. I, 8893 (knows only this edition) - Osler, W. Bibliotheca Osleriana, 3961 (copy without frontispiece) - Garrison, F.H. Medical bibliography, 289. - Title edition of Severino's early monograph on snakes, snake venoms and the remedies extracted from them, with detailed treatment of mythological and cultural-historical aspects, which Giovanni Georgi also congenially depicted in his etchings. The first edition of this book was published in 1650. The physician Marco Aurelio Severino (1580-1656), who worked in Naples, is known today above all for his research into comparative anatomy, "he dissected many animals and was convicted that the microscope would throw light on comparative anatomy." (Garrison-Morton, referring to Severino's "Zootomia Democritaea", 1645). - Attached is the first print of a treatise by the Sicilian scholar Giovanni Battista Odierna (1597-1660), a pupil of Galileo, on the anatomy of the snake's tooth ("Dentis in vipera virulenti anothomia (!) ..."), which is not available to us via OCLC and KVK in any copy. - Actually complete copies with the author's portrait and the errata leaf are rare, cf. the specimen copies of the reference works. - Title page upper right and endpapers verso with hs. Owner's notes in an old hand on verso. - Binding partially discoloured, stained and rubbed, endpapers, title page and appendix foxed in places, some leaves browned, frontispiece slightly fingerstained, otherwise a well-preserved copy with clean etchings, as is rarely the case.

The first impression of present edition was published in 1650.
