Ayer Ornithological Library. - The large-format atlas with splendid chromolithographs of various birds from all over the world, the lithographs from the Vienna Court and State Printing Office, much praised for the quality of its natural history prints. - Provenance: 1) Anni and Toni Halik, with their lithograph. Ex-libris on the front cover. - 2) A. Oelzelt, with his owner's stamp on the title pages of the text volumes recto. - Spines of the text volumes bleached, paper browned. Corners of atlas somewhat bumped, spine and edges slightly rubbed in places. Some quires broken in the fold in places, a few plates somewhat browned, otherwise a well-preserved copy in a representative binding, the colours of the clean lithographed plates of great freshness. Zoology. - Herpetology. - With 347 illustrations (often with 2 fig. each) with calligraphic captions on 164 chromolithographic plates. - First edition of Fitzinger's scarce, gorgeously illustrated work about the gobal bird population. - Large-format atlas with splendid chromolithographs of various birds from all over the world, the lithographs from the printer's to the Habsburg Court, much praised for the quality of their natural history prints. - Final volume of series 'Bilder-Atlas zur wissenschaftlich-populären Naturgeschichte der Säugethiere, Fische, Amphibien und Vögel in ihren sämmtlichen Hauptformen', consisting of four thematically independent pictorial works published between 1855 and 1864. Two text volumes were published separately in 1862-63 as vol. 7 and 8 of the adjacent series 'Naturgeschichte der drei Reiche' under the title 'Wissenschaftlich-populäre Naturgeschichte der Vögel'. - Provenance: Anni u. Toni Halik, with lithographed book-plate on front paste-down. - Binding somewhat bumped at the corners, spine and edges occasionally slightly worn. Binding of some sheets loosened at joints, a few plates somewhat time-stained, generally s well-preserved copy in a representative binding, the colours of the clean lithographed plates of great freshness and intensity.
