Ayer, 562 - Nissen IVB, 843 - Lithographs signed in the stone by John Gerrard Keulemans. - The first volume of the series deals with the 229 known species of songbirds of the Argentine Republic. With the publication of the second volume in the following year, the remaining 434 Argentinian bird species known at that time were covered. Both volumes contain notes by W. H. Hudson on the behaviour of the various species and are accompanied by a total of 20 colourful lithographs. - Philip Lutley Sclater was a British zoologist and founder of the Journal of the British Ornithologists' Union.
