A SHOWER PORCELAIN SUGAR POT, CIRCA 1745-1750; DAMAGES, PARTIALLY FIRING, LOSSES, COVER MISSING
The decoration on this sugar bowl, which is of remarkable quality, may perhaps be part of the 'children's games' decorations on the factory cards (A. Biancalana, Porcellana e Maioliche a Doccia', Firenze 2009, p. 149) known in several variants, and in this case declined in a strong classical imprint: in particular, the motif of the putto riding the goat is found in a tea set decorated with a yellow background and datable to around 1750, now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (gift J. A. Lewis, 1946, 46.103 a,b).
