Lot no. 1023
TWO APOSTLES FROM A GROUP OF FIGURES
Late Gothic, Upper Rhine around 1480/1500.
Carved and painted lime, hollowed on the reverse. The two saints in animated postures and with expressive facial expressions. One figure probably depicts St Peter.
H 87 cm.
Painting heavily rubbed in places. Lower arms missing. Losses and chipping to the hem of the garment.
Provenance: Private property in western Switzerland from the Château de Courtaney à Avry, Fribourg.
Fragment probably from a larger altarpiece group with the twelve apostles in connection with Mary's death. The facial expression of the figure on the left indicates that she is extinguishing a light or a candle, as is often the case with the death of the Virgin Mary.
