Lot no. 1746
TWO-PIECE ENAMELLED CUTLERY SET Saxon, dated 1684. Conical blue and black enamelled handle with applied vine decoration in silver with remnants of gilding and with two portrait medallions of an older (probably Gustav II Adolf King of Sweden) and a young regent. Rounded grip ends with engraved floral decoration, the cap with the coats of arms of Saxony and Brandenburg. Monogram WB and dated 1684, the grip ferrule engraved with half blossoms. Gilt, pointed blade on the cutting side. Forge mark. Gilt fork with two prongs. L Knife 20.5 cm, fork 19.5 cm. Enamelling and silver applications with minor dents, defects and cracks, one portrait slightly detached. Signs of use. Silver oxidised. Gilding rubbed. The Marquardt Collection holds a three-piece set of cutlery with related handles visible. In addition, the engraved leaf decoration on the handle cap is identical to our examples. Marquardt mentions a smith's mark with crossed swords and three superimposed marks, which is identified as a Saxon mark. Cf. Klaus Marquardt. European cutlery from eight centuries. Stuttgart, 1997 p. 111, fig. 347A. Another comparative example in: Arthur Pabst. The Richard Zschille Art Collections in Grossenhain, Cutlery Collection Dining, Table, Gardening Utensils and Tools. Berlin. 1893, plate 18, fig. 108 (black and white photo). The colour of the black enamel on the handle and the blue enamel for the medallions mentioned in the catalogue description matches our examples. The portrait of the elder regent probably depicts the Swedish King Gustav II Adolf of Sweden (1594-1632), who had entered into a coalition with the Electorate of Saxony during the Thirty Years' War. Gustav II Adolf of Sweden died in Lützen (Electorate of Saxony).
