Un chasseur-bombardier americain s’est violemment ecrase a l’oree de la colline des Blancs Bois sur les hauteurs d’Houffalize pres de Bastogne. Il s’agissait du Thunderbolt P47D matricule 42-29188 du Second Lieutenant Harry Lawrence Lordi, jeune new-yorkais ne dans le Bronx, ou son pere immigre italien s’etait installe dans les annees 1920. Harry Lordi n’a pas survecu au crash de son appareil. Quelques jours plus tard, mon pere et son meilleur ami se sont approches de l’epave. Curieux comme peut l’etre un enfant, mon pere est monte a bord du cockpit vide. C’est en fouillant avec un baton qu’il a decouvert, dans les restes calcines du tableau de bord, une imposante chevaliere doree. Cette bague a ete faconnee au debut des annees 1940 par la maison Josten, fondee en 1897. D’apres nos recherches, le P47 a ete abattu le 1er janvier 1945 pres de Martelange par un tir de Flak. Le pilote Harry L. Lordi Jr. est decede dans le crash. Il appartenait a la Neuvieme Air Force. Harry Lordi’s signet ring made of 10-carat gold weighing approximately 17 grams. The seller provided the background of the ring. On January 1, 1945 during the Battle of the Bulge, my father who was twelve years old at the time witnessed a wartime event. An American fighter-bomber crashed violently at the edge of the Blancs Bois hill overlooking Houffalize near Bastogne. The aircraft was a P-47D Thunderbolt with serial number 42-29188 and was piloted by Second Lieutenant Harry Lawrence Lordi, a young New Yorker born in the Bronx where his Italian father had settled in the 1920s. Harry Lordi did not survive the crash. A few days later, my father and his best friend approached the wreck. As any curious child might do, my father climbed into the empty cockpit. While probing with a stick, he discovered a large gold ring among the charred remains of the dashboard. The ring was produced in the early 1940s by the American jewelry firm Josten founded in 1897. Our research indicates that the P-47 was shot down on January 1, 1945 near Martelange by anti-aircraft fire. Pilot Harry L. Lordi Jr. died in the crash. He served with the Ninth Air Force.
