Lot no. 413
Chevaliere by Harry Lordi. 10 carat gold ring weighing approximately 17 grams. Beautiful American eagle with Pilot Glider USAAF and engraved Harry Lordi name. Made by the American jeweller Josten. The seller has passed on the history of this ring. On 1 January 1945, at the height of the Battle of the Bulge, my father, then aged twelve, witnessed a plane crash. An American fighter-bomber crashed violently on the edge of the hill of Blancs Bois on the heights of Houffalize near Bastogne. It was the Thunderbolt P47D, registration number 42-29188 of Second Lieutenant Harry Lawrence Lordi, a young New Yorker born in the Bronx, where his Italian immigrant father had settled in the 1920s. Harry Lordi did not survive the crash of his plane. A few days later, my father and his best friend approached the wreckage. Curious as a child can be, my father climbed aboard the empty cockpit. Digging through the charred remains of the dashboard with a stick, he discovered an imposing gilded signet ring. This ring was made in the early 1940s by Josten, a company founded in 1897. According to our research, the P47 was shot down on 1 January 1945 near Martelange by Flak fire. Pilot Harry L. Lordi Jr. was killed in the crash. He was a member of the Ninth Air Force. Harry Lordi's signet ring made of 10-carat gold weighing approximately 17 grams. The ring features a detailed American eagle with the inscription Pilot Glider USAAF and is engraved with the name Harry Lordi. It was crafted by the American jeweller Josten. The seller provided the background of the ring. On January 1, 1945 during the Battle of the Bulge, my father who was twelve years old at the time witnessed a wartime event. An American fighter-bomber crashed violently at the edge of the Blancs Bois hill overlooking Houffalize near Bastogne. The aircraft was a P-47D Thunderbolt with serial number 42-29188 and was piloted by Second Lieutenant Harry Lawrence Lordi, a young New Yorker born in the Bronx where his Italian father had settled in the 1920s. Harry Lordi did not survive the crash. A few days later, my father and his best friend approached the wreck. As any curious child might do, my father climbed into the empty cockpit. While probing with a stick, he discovered a large gold ring among the charred remains of the dashboard. The ring was produced in the early 1940s by the American jewelry firm Josten founded in 1897. Our research indicates that the P-47 was shot down on January 1, 1945 near Martelange by anti-aircraft fire. Pilot Harry L. Lordi Jr. died in the crash. He served with the Ninth Air Force.
