NGC MS* 5/5 3/5 bankers mark. On a slightly oblong flan. A countermark on the reverse in M. The fields are barely marked with a slight patina on the original lustre. Very rare with possibly only three known examples. About Uncirculated to Mint State.
In 27 BC, Octavian gained complete control of the State and was awarded the title of Augustus by the Senate and the People. He received the civic crown and laurels. A golden shield, the Clipeus Virtuti, honouring his Virtue, Clemency, Justice and Piety, was hung in the Senate. The mints of Asia and Spain would take up this theme in the years that followed. Extremely rare, with only three known examples, all from the same dies and bearing an M countermark on the reverse (our example, countermark on the left / Calicó 287 = Sotheby's, 12 and 13 December 1994, no. 22, countermark on the right / NAC 94, 6 October 2016, no. 57 = CNG Triton XI, 8 January 2008, no. 749 = Leu 87, 6 May 2003, no. 1 = NAC 8, 1995, no. 774 = NAC XXII, 1 June 1989, no. 30).
