On a slightly oblong blank. A countermark on the reverse in M. The fields barely marked with a slight patina on the original gloss. Very rare with perhaps three known examples. Superb at Fleur de coin. In 27 BC, Octavian took complete control of the state and was awarded the title of Augustus by the Senate and the People. He received the civic crown and laurels. A gold shield, the Clipeus Virtuti, honouring his Virtue, Clemency, Justice and Piety, was hung in the Senate. Monetary workshops in Asia and Spain would take up this theme in the years that followed.
