Born in Odessa to an Orthodox Jewish family, he studied at the Grekov Odessa Art School, Moscow University, and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. A friend of Leo Tolstoy, Pasternak painted numerous portraits of the writer and illustrated War and Peace and Resurrection.
