Born in Odessa into an Orthodox Jewish family, he studied at the Grekov School of Art in Odessa, the University of Moscow and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. A friend of Leo Tolstoy, Pasternak painted many portraits of the writer and illustrated War and Peace and Resurrection.
