Il intègre l'institut national des Arts de Bamako après avoir été remarqué pour ses talents de dessinateur, c’est dans la capitale qu'il rencontre Gérard Guillat, qui l’initie à la pratique de la photographie et au tirage argentique. Il ouvre son propre studio en 1958 dans lequel se retrouve la jeunesse bamakoise des années post-indépendance. Surnommé « l’œil de Bamako», Malick Sidibé capture, jusqu’à la fin des années 70, l'effervescence de la capitale malienne, au plus près des jeunes dont il est très proche, il documente leur quotidien en devenant le photographe attitré des soirées et des évènements festifs. He met Gérard Guillat in the capital, who introduced him to photography and silver prints. He opened his own studio in 1958 where post-independence Bamako youth liked to meet. Dubbed "the eye of Bamako", until the end of the 70s Malick Sidibé captured the effervescence of the Malian capital.
