Malick Sidibé was born in Soloba, Mali, in 1936. After being noticed for his talent as a draughtsman, he enrolled at the National Arts Institute in Bamako. It was in the capital that he met Gérard Guillat, who introduced him to photography and silver prints. He opened his own studio in 1958, where the youth of post-independence Bamako could be found. Nicknamed "the eye of Bamako", Malick Sidibé captured the effervescence of the Malian capital until the end of the 1970s, working closely with the young people to whom he was very close, documenting their daily lives and becoming their regular photographer at parties and festive events.
