ARMINIUS VAMBERY (Hermann Wamberger ; 1832-1913) - Orientaliste hongrois, spécialiste en turcologie, voyageur, publiciste et polyglotte. En 1861, il entreprend un voyage dans les pays d'Asie centrale. Son itinéraire le mène de Trabzon à Téhéran, où il rejoint des pèlerins revenant de la Mecque. Il passe plusieurs mois à voyager avec en Iran central, visitant Tabriz, Zanjan et Qazvin. Passant par Ispahan et Chiraz, il arrive au khanat de Khiva en juin 1863, puis à l'émirat de Boukhara. Le général et orientaliste russe Mikhaïl Afrikanovitch Terentyev s'est demandé si Vambery avait réellement visité l'Asie centrale. "J'ai personnellement pu vérifier deux choses à Samarcande qui montrent que Vambery ne les a pas vues et qu'il n'a donc pas été à Samarcande", écrit Terentyev dans son livre Russia and England in Central Asia (La Russie et l'Angleterre en Asie centrale). In 1861, he embarked on a journey to the countries of Central Asia. His route took him through Trabzon to Tehran, where he joined pilgrims returning from Mecca.
