ARMINIUS VAMBERY (Hermann Wamberger; 1832-1913)
- Hungarian Orientalist, specialist in Turkishology, traveller, publicist and polyglot.
In 1861, he set off on a journey through the countries of Central Asia. His route took him from Trabzon to Tehran, where he joined pilgrims returning from Mecca. He spent several months travelling with them in central Iran, visiting Tabriz, Zanjan and Qazvin.
Passing through Isfahan and Shiraz, he reached the Khanate of Khiva in June 1863, then the Emirate of Bukhara. The Russian general and orientalist Mikhail Afrikanovich Terentyev wondered whether Vambery had really visited Central Asia. "I have personally been able to verify two things in Samarkand which show that Vambery did not see them and therefore did not go to Samarkand," Terentyev wrote in his book Russia and England in Central Asia. Vámbéry's voyage was one of the first European
