William Collingwood Smith, membre de la Old Water Colour Society dès 1843, a voyagé en Angleterre mais aussi sur le continent à partir de 1850, et notamment en France. Ses séjours lui inspirent plusieurs vues françaises, comme Notre-Dame, Paris ou encore L'Eglise Saint-Rémy, rue Thomas Bouchard à Dieppe, aquarelle conservée au Musée municipal de Dieppe.
