An 19th century vari-coloured gold portrait box, probably German Rectangular in shape, the hinged lid set with a miniature on ivory depicting a bust of a woman, wearing a white muslin dress and red stole, signed lower right A.Hall, on a grey background, within a frame of flowering foliage on an amati background and blue enamel fillet. Adelaïde Victoire Hall (1772-1844) daughter and pupil of the Swedish miniature painter Pierre Adolphe Hall, height 1.9cm, length 8.8cm, weight 128gms. The young woman in our miniature is dressed in Directoire fashion, like Thérésa Tallien, Juliette Récamier and Joséphine de Beauharnais..., 'The last time I saw [Madame Tallien], this marvel wore a simple dress of muslin from India, draped in the antique style and fastened over the shoulders with two cameos.
