A dynamic study of a mounted horseman, this drawing has been attributed to Joseph Parrocel by François Marandet on stylistic grounds. The pose of the rider is closely comparable to that in Parrocel's painting sold in Lyon, Beron Pérard, 6 June 2015, lot 21, and reflects the artist's distinctive handling of equestrian subjects that established his reputation as the leading French battle painter of the late seventeenth century.
