Attributed to Joseph Parrocel (Brignoles 1646-1704 Paris) Study of a horseman charging his opponent black stone on grey paper, the lower right corner has been cut off and replaced black chalk on grey paper, lower right corner cut and replaced 21.7 x 27.7cm (8 9/16 x 10 7/8in). Provenance Unidentified collector (unidentified mark WB) Private collection, France A dynamic study of a mounted horseman, this drawing has been attributed to Joseph Parrocel by François Marandet on stylistic grounds. The pose of the rider is closely comparable to that in Parrocel's painting sold in Lyon, Beron Pérard, 6 June 2015, lot 21, and reflects the artist's distinctive handling of equestrian subjects that established his reputation as the leading French battle painter of the late seventeenth century.
