He then began to reflect on the structure of the painting and the materiality of the brushstroke; the production of a dense material, through additions, washes and scrapings, resulted two years later in paintings that were almost white - but that buried within them other whites and a few coloured residues, lines and shapes. From 1990 onwards, Sicilia chose wax and paper for most of his works. These materials have the singular ability to reveal or blur, to stop or filter light, a new component of the work. The wax, poured in thin layers, sometimes covers the images and printed sheets, sometimes supports immense flowers painted in oil.
