93. A SHINTŌ KATANA IN MOUNTS
Edo period (1615-1868), 17th century
Honzukuri, iorimune, chūgissaki, toriizori forged in fine koitamehada with a broad suguha tempered edge in nie ending in a komaru bōshi, the suriage nakago (tang) with two holes and indistinct file marks, 64.5cm long, with a one-piece copper habaki; the koshira-e comprising a later black-lacquer saya, the tsuka wrapped in white silk and fitted with shakudō nanako fuchigashira decorated with a carp in crashing waves and samurai under a pine tree, the shakudō menuki formed as dragons, with an oval iron tsuba chiselled with a mountainous landscape with gilt highlights, signed Shōami
This blade has, by repute, been attributed to Hioki Echizen no kami Minamoto Munehiro in a certificate issued by the Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai (Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Art Sword), with a date of 1661.
