A PAIR OF CANDELABRA “AUX FEMMES AILÉES” Louis XVI style, Paris, ca. 1880/90. Attributed to Maison Beurdeley (probably Louis-Auguste-Alfred Beurdeley, 1808–1882), based on designs by François Rémond (ca. 1745–1812). Marked (B)Y on the drip pan intermediate piece and the bronze feet numbered. Finely worked bronze, chased and gilt, with a biscuit medallion. In the shape of a kneeling harpy with an acanthus and grape tail, holding a twisted shaft with an acanthus nozzle from which four curved volute light arms rise up, each of them decorated with flowers and acanthus leaves, and each with a wide drip pan and a vase-shaped nozzle. On a bastion base with white marble inlays and gilt friezes. The front of the base with a blue biscuit medallion framed by bronze decoration in the form of a flower garland with a bow, the back with a blind cartouche. On tall, fluted feet decorated with acanthus leaves. The central torch is altered for a fitting for electricity. H 54 cm, L 32 cm. Few signs of use. One marble inlay with a crack extending through it. One medallion with a restored crack extending through it. Bronzes with a few scratches and rubbing. The design of these outstanding candelabra is based on a design drawing for a fireplace chenet by François Rémond from 1780. The latter is inscribed “Feux Lamballe” and “pour la Princesse Lamballe”, as the fireplace chenet was intended for Marie-Thérèse, Princess of Lamballe. A corresponding fireplace chenet by Rémond, circa 1785, is in the Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon (inv. no. 42 A/B). The winged female figure of the candelabra on offer was taken almost integrally from Rémond's design, and the striking scroll motif with the leaf and flower decoration from the tail of the harpy is also found in the light branches. (See Ottomeyer/Pröschel: Vergoldete Bronzen. Munich 1986, vol. I, p. 279, fig. 4.12.3). In addition to Beurdeley, other bronze founders in the 19th century made use of this design by Rémond. Ottomeyer/Pröschel mention a pendulum clock with an urn top by Henry Dasson (ibid. p. 278, No. 4.12.2) and candelabras of a fireplace set, also by Henry Dasson (ibid. p. 426, No. 6.3.16), in which the figures of the harpies were adapted. The quality of the design and the bronze work and gilding suggest that it is a work by Beurdeley. The model was also presented by him at the “Exposition universelle à Chicago” in 1893, as a photo from that time shows. A very similar pair of candelabra, attributed to Louis-Auguste-Alfred Beurdeley and marked BY on the underside, was sold at Sotheby's New York (April 13, 2016, lot 546). * The full tax is charged on this item marked * in the auction catalogue, i.e. VAT is charged on the sum of the bid price plus the surcharge for those items. Gemarkt (B)Y auf Tropftellerzwischenteil sowie Bronzefüsse nummeriert. Bronze fein gearbeitet, ziseliert sowie vergoldet und Biskuit-Medaillon. In Form einer knienden Harpyie mit Akanthus- und Weintraubenschweif, die einen tordierten Schaft mit Akanthustülle hält, aus welchem vier geschweifte, mit Blumen und Akanthusblättern besetzten, Volutenlichtarme mit jeweils breitem Tropfteller und vasenförmiger Tülle emporgehen. Auf Bastionssockel mit weissen Marmoreinlagen sowie vergoldeten Blatt-, Perl- und Zierfriesen. Die Front des Sockels mit blauem Biskuit-Medaillon, umrahmt von Bronzezier in Form einer Blumengirlande mit Masche, die Rückseite mit blinder Kartusche. Auf hohen, kannelierten sowie mit Akanthusblättern besetzten Kreiselfüssen. Zentralfackel für ehemalige Elektrifizierung alteriert. H 54 cm, L 32 cm. Wenige Gebrauchsspuren. Eine Marmoreinlage mit durchgehendem Riss. Ein Medaillon mit restauriertem durchgehendem Riss. Bronzen mit wenigen Kratzern und berieben. Der Entwurf dieser hervorragenden Girandolen geht auf eine Entwurfszeichnung für einen Kaminbock von François Rémond aus dem Jahr 1780 zurück. Diese ist mit "Feux Lamballe" und "pour la Princesse Lamballe" bezeichnet, da der Kaminbock für Marie-Thérèse, Prinzessin von Lamballe bestimmt war. Ein entsprechender Feuerbock von Rémond, um 1785, befindet sich im Gulbenkian Museum in Lissabon (Inv.-Nr. 42 A/B). Für die angebotenen Girandolen wurde aus dem Entwurf von Rémond die geflügelte weibliche Figur fast integral übernommen, ausserdem findet sich das auffällige Motiv Voluten mit Blatt- und Blütendekor des Schwanzes der Harpyie auch in den Lichtarmen wieder. (Vgl. Ottomeyer/Pröschel: Vergoldete Bronzen. München 1986, Bd I, S. 279, Abb. 4.12.3). Neben Beurdeley bedienten sich weitere Bronziegiesser des 19. Jh. motivisch dieses Entwurfs von Rémond. Ottomeyer/Pröschel erwähnen eine Pendule mit Urnenaufsatz von Henry Dasson (Ebd. S. 278, Nr. 4.12.2) sowie Girandolen einer Kamingarnitur, ebenso von Henry Dasson (Ebd. S. 426, Nr. 6.3.16), bei welchen die Harpyienfiguren adaptiert wurden. Qualität von Entwurf und Bronzearbeit sowie Vergoldung lassen auf eine Arbeit von Beurdeley schliessen. Das Modell wurde von diesem auch an der "Exposition universelle à Chicago" 1893 präsentiert, wie ein Foto aus dieser Zeit zeigt. Ein sehr ähnliches Girandolen-Paar, Louis-Auguste-Alfred Beurdeley zugeschrieben sowie auf der Unterseite gemarkt BY, wurde bei Sotheby's New York verkauft (13. April 2016, Lot 546). Dieses mit * (Asterisk) bezeichnete Objekte ist vollumfänglich mehrwertsteuerpflichtig, d. h. bei diesen Objekten wird die MWST auf den Zuschlagspreis plus Aufgeld berechnet. Käufer, die eine rechtsgültig abgestempelte Ausfuhrdeklaration vorlegen, erhalten die MWST rückvergütet.
