ALABASTRON Glass paste H. 11.5 cm Eastern Mediterranean, c. 5th century BC Provenance Public sale, Les Adelys Encheresm 24/07/2024, lot 276 French private collection A glass alabastron of elongated fusiform form, with a short flared neck ending in a wide circular mouth with a hemmed lip. Two small horizontal tubular handles are applied symmetrically to the sides of the neck. The decoration is the most spectacular feature of this piece: the entire surface is decorated with a polychrome marble pattern created using the feathered pattern technique. Undulating chevron or feather trails alternate between black, creamy white and yellow-beige, creating a dynamic and hypnotic visual effect. These vertical zigzag patterns cascade down the length of the body, evoking stylised feathers or flames. The lip and neck also show traces of this marbled decoration. The decoration constitutes the most spectacular element of this piece: the entire surface is decorated with a polychrome marbled pattern created by the feathered glass technique. Undulating streaks in chevrons or feathers alternate black, cream white, and yellow-beige, creating a dynamic and hypnotic visual effect. These vertical zigzag patterns cascade down the entire length of the body, evoking stylized feathers or flames. The rim and neck also show traces of this marbled decoration.
