"I don't paint a subject, I paint the light on that subject". A. M. Marquet established himself as one of the most subtle observers of the urban landscape of his time. The Pont Neuf, Paris, Autumn was a central subject in his career, which he treated on several occasions between the 1910s and the late 1930s. The slightly elevated angle, typical of his views of the Seine, offers both a panoramic and intimate vision of the capital, where the calm of the river and the fluidity of the forms convey the poetry of everyday life. This mature version stands out for its limited palette of greys, greens and ochres, the softness of the autumn light and its generous format (73.5 x 92 cm), which is exceptional for this theme. This large format, rarely found in Marquet's views of Paris, which the artist reserved for his major compositions, gives it a pictorial power and breath of air equivalent to those of the museum compositions on the same subject exhibited at the Musée d'Orsay, the Centre Georges Pompidou or the MET. This work sums up forty years of research into light, reflection and space. Its rarity, size, excellent state of conservation and inclusion in the Wildenstein Institute's catalogue raisonné make it one of Marquet's most emblematic paintings.
