Andy Warhol's four-part series ‘Details of Renaissance Paintings (Sandro Botticelli, Birth of Venus)’ from 1984 marks a significant turning point in his late period, in which he engaged intensively with European art history. In this group of works, Warhol devoted himself to central icons of the Old Masters - including Leonardo da Vinci, Paolo Uccello and Piero della Francesca - and reinterpreted them through the lens of his characteristic Pop Art aesthetic. Warhol extracts emblematic details from canonised masterpieces and transfers them into a new cultural context characterised by serial reproduction, garish colour contrasts and the aesthetics of consumer culture. In this colour silkscreen, he chooses a greatly enlarged section of the Venus figure from Botticelli's famous ‘Birth of Venus’. By focussing on the face of the goddess, he shifts the perspective from the overall narrative context to the iconic close-up. The use of atypical, bright colours and the serial reproduction emphasise the tension between the original and the reproduction, between historical high culture and contemporary mass aesthetics. Warhol's approach to Botticelli is far more than a postmodern homage. Rather, it is a conscious artistic appropriation in which the sacred status of one of the most important works within the Western art tradition is translated into the visual language of advertising, fashion and pop culture. Venus, once a symbol of idealised beauty and divine grace, becomes a secularised pop icon - her aura is broken, reproduced, demystified and at the same time restaged. With this work, Warhol enters into an open dialogue with art history and at the same time questions its supposed inviolability. He shows that even the most sublime works are not immune to the codes of 20th century culture and media. Andy Warhols vierteilige Serie "Details of Renaissance Paintings (Sandro Botticelli, Birth of Venus)" aus dem Jahr 1984 markiert einen signifikanten Wendepunkt in der späten Schaffensphase des Künstlers, in der er sich intensiv mit der europäischen Kunstgeschichte auseinandersetzt. In dieser Werkgruppe widmet sich Warhol zentralen Ikonen der Alten Meister – darunter Leonardo da Vinci, Paolo Uccello und Piero della Francesca – und interpretiert diese durch die Linse seiner charakteristischen Pop-Art-Ästhetik neu. Warhol extrahiert dabei emblematische Details aus kanonisierten Meisterwerken und überführt sie in einen neuen kulturellen Kontext, der von serieller Reproduktion, grellen Farbkontrasten und der Ästhetik der Konsumkultur geprägt ist. In der vorliegenden Farbserigrafie wählt er einen stark vergrösserten Ausschnitt der Venus-Figur aus Botticellis berühmter Geburt der Venus. Indem er sich auf das Gesicht der Göttin konzentriert, verschiebt er die Perspektive vom narrativen Gesamtkontext hin zur ikonischen Nahaufnahme. Die Verwendung untypischer, leuchtender Farben sowie die serielle Vervielfältigung betonen die Spannung zwischen Original und Reproduktion, zwischen historischer Hochkultur und zeitgenössischer Massenästhetik. Warhols Zugang zu Botticelli ist dabei weit mehr als eine postmoderne Hommage. Vielmehr handelt es sich um eine bewusste künstlerische Aneignung, in der der sakrale Status eines der bedeutendsten Werke der westlichen Kunsttradition in die Bildsprache von Werbung, Mode und Popkultur übersetzt wird. Die Venus, einst Sinnbild idealisierter Schönheit und göttlicher Anmut, wird zur säkularisierten Pop-Ikone – ihre Aura wird gebrochen, reproduziert, entmystifiziert und zugleich neu inszeniert. Mit dieser Arbeit tritt Warhol in einen offenen Dialog mit der Kunstgeschichte ein und stellt zugleich deren vermeintliche Unantastbarkeit infrage. Er zeigt auf, dass auch die erhabensten Werke nicht vor den kulturellen und medialen Codes des 20. Jahrhunderts gefeit sind. Es gelingt ihm, klassische Ideale mit zeitgenössischer Bildsprache zu verbinden und damit die Mechanismen der kulturellen Bedeutungsproduktion auf radikale Weise zu reflektieren.
