Lot no. 111
BOUCHARD Aîné & Fils. Archives of a Burgundy house. When Michel Bouchard set up a flourishing linen and cloth business in Burgundy in 1731, and then developed a business as a wine merchant, he established the family's Burgundy roots. His eldest son, Joseph, took over in 1750, anchoring the Bouchard family in the Côte-d'Or.
From the end of the 18th century, Joseph Bouchard set about enlarging his estate in Volnay and his house in Beaune, ushering in an era of prolific acquisitions and the rise of the wine merchant. The French Revolution marked a decisive step, enabling the family to reconstitute the great estates of the Ancien Régime by acquiring vines that had belonged to abbeys and the nobility. These included Clos Saint Landry, Avaux, Teurons and Enfant Jésus in Beaune.
"Vigne de l'Enfant Jésus". According to legend, Marguerite du Saint Sacrement, a Carmelite nun who founded the "Domestiques de la famille du Saint Enfant Jésus", prayed for Queen Anne of Austria to give France a Dauphin and predicted the birth of King Louis XIV of France. Since then, this terroir in the heart of the "Les Grèves" appellation has borne the name of "l'Enfant Jésus".
In 1811, the name "Bouchard Père et Fils" became official. Acquisitions continued throughout the 19th century.
From 1785 to the end of the 19th century, the name remained unchanged. Bouchard Père et Fils had been established at Château de Beaune since 1820.
With a vineyard of over 130 hectares, including 12 hectares of Grand Cru and 74 hectares of Premier Cru, Bouchard Père & Fils has been the largest owner of Beaune 1er Cru for several generations.
