During the Ardennes offensive, the 26th Volksgrenadier Division was part of the XLVII Armoured Corps of the 5th German Armoured Army. Its mission was to cross the Our river, then the Clerve, and advance towards Bastogne, a strategic road junction. At 5.30 am on 16 December 1944, the division launched its attack by crossing the Our near Gemund. Despite fierce resistance from American forces, particularly the 110th Infantry Regiment, the division succeeded in advancing, but was delayed in its progress towards Bastogne. The 26th Volksgrenadier Division took part in the encirclement of Bastogne, but was unable to take the town, which was defended by the 101st American Airborne Division.
