Lot no. 924
COLLECTION OF GREEK DAUNIAN PAINTED JUGS.
Ca. 500 BC.
A fine and varied group of four Daunian ceramic jugs, each of globular or slightly ovoid form with a single vertical handle and flaring rim. The bodies are decorated with horizontal bands of red and black paint over a pale buff or cream slip, a characteristic feature of Daunian geometric pottery. The group displays minor variations in profile and decorative scheme, illustrating the regional stylistic diversity of Daunia during the Archaic and Classical periods. All exhibit attractive surface patination and signs of age, serving as evocative examples of the Italic ceramic tradition.
