French work, 20th century
The Trésor de Boscoréale is an exceptional collection of silver objects discovered in 1895 near Pompeii, in a Roman villa buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Comprising over a hundred pieces - crockery, jewellery, richly decorated bowls and ingots - it bears witness to the refinement of the Roman elite on the eve of the catastrophe. Preserved for the most part in the Louvre, this treasure trove offers an invaluable insight into the art of living, luxury and silversmithing skills of imperial Rome.
