Lot no. 1949
Eike Heinrich Redel (born 1951 Castrop-Rauxel, resident in Horstmar)
"Maori". Original title
In addition to his naturalistic animal pieces, overpaintings are another important theme and artistic medium in Redel's oeuvre. In this work, he reworked the traditional, "stiff" Biedermeier portrait of a greying gentleman in typical European fashion by adding a Maori tattoo to his face and traditional oceanic jade jewellery. This completely reinterprets the painting from the early 19th century, raising questions about personal and cultural identity, Europe's relationship to foreign, exotic countries and colonisation. Oil on canvas, mounted. Verso old paper label with modern inscription/sign " - Maori von E. H. Redel - "Ergänzung" and old machine inscription "Dem Sohn zugeeignet 1827", also l. u. "No. 1777". 61 cm x 49 cm. Frame.
Oil on canvas. Overpainting by Redel of an old 19th century Biedermeier portrait. Inscribed with title and signed on an old label on the reverse.
