Original title In addition to his naturalistic animal pieces, overpaintings are another important theme and artistic medium in Redel's oeuvre. In this work, he reworked the traditional, "stiff" Biedermeier portrait of a greying gentleman in typical European fashion by adding a Maori tattoo to his face and traditional oceanic jade jewellery. This completely reinterprets the painting from the early 19th century, raising questions about personal and cultural identity, Europe's relationship to foreign, exotic countries and colonisation.
