Lot no. 72
Filipino “Mundo” Chest in Waxed Carved Cedarwood (Kalantas) with Iron Mounts. Philippines. 17th – 18th century.
60,5 x 90 x 48 cm.
Chests such as this were essential items for travelers of the period, typical of those that journeyed aboard the Manila Galleon, serving to transport valuable goods. The galleon gave its name to the trade route connecting the Viceroyalty of New Spain (Mexico) with the Philippines and China between 1565 and 1815.
The manufacture of these chests relied on cedarwood, prized for its durability and natural resistance to decay and wood-boring insects, thus protecting the goods it contained—often textiles and garments—from damage. The aromatic cedar also repelled moths whose larvae could destroy fabrics.
The kalantas, or Philippine cedar, was abundant in the islands’ forests. Its reddish, durable hardwood was ideal for carving: soft and workable when freshly cut, it hardened beautifully as it dried.
Filipino artisans carved cedar to imitate embossed Cordoban leather, following Moorish-inspired designs, sometimes polychromed and gilded to achieve a richly decorative effect. The mundo chest type is characterized by its domed lid and profuse ornamentation of scrolls and arabesques.
This example features magnificent floral and vegetal decoration across its entire surface—on the domed lid and all four sides. The front and lateral panels are adorned with large vases from which floral branches emerge, while the sides display pointed horseshoe arches of Mozarabic inspiration framing the decorative scenes, a detail that makes this chest particularly remarkable.
Four vertical carved bands extend from front to back, each with continuous scroll designs bordered by scalloped edges. Between these bands flow serpentine floral motifs, carved with great finesse. The structure is assembled using large dovetail joints, and the iron fittings, lock, and side handles are of fine workmanship, preserving even the original key.
Comparable examples include:
A carved cedar chest (17th–18th centuries) in the Museo Franz Mayer, Mexico.
An 18th-century carved wooden travel chest belonging to Bishop Acosta, held in the Museo Nacional de Historia, Chapultepec.
Both appear in the exhibition catalogue El Galeón de Manila (2000).
Another related example is held at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), inventory no. M.2019.269 (LACMA Collections).
It is widely acknowledged that the Manila Galleon had a profound impact on trade, art, and culture between Europe, Mexico, and Asia. Decorative arts in New Spain during the 17th and 18th centuries were greatly enriched by influences from the Far East, blending European and Asian designs with local craftsmanship across the Spanish Empire. This synthesis—often referred to as the “exotic luxury” of viceregal interiors—was epitomized by imported furniture such as chests and caskets, prized for their materials, craftsmanship, and refinement—qualities clearly evident in this magnificent Filipino “mundo” chest.
