Lot no. 108
FRAGMENT OF AN IMPERIAL SCROLL, INK AND COLOUR ON SILK CHINA, QING DYNASTY, QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795) The present fragment represents a number of pavilions, walls, lakes and canals in the middle of gardens. Men with swords, some dressed in mandarin robes and wearing the official hat of the imperial court, and servants, engaged in various tasks, operate in the gardens. An important official of the imperial court visits the gardens with other people in the lower left part of the painting ; an old label in the top left refers to a provenance from the Yuan Ming Yuan, October 10, 1860 The scene can be located in a part of the old Summer Palace. Similar buildings can be found on the Forty views of the Yuanmingyuan Palace, commissioned by Emperor Qianlong (actually in the French National Library). As an example, the tower painted on the view Dongtian schenchu is very similar, as well as roofs, walls or doors in the walls. The central two floors building, situated in the centre of the painting, with a large stair going to the first floor can be found on the view Tianran tuhua of the album. On both paintings, water and rocks surround the building. The costumes can be compared to those of the famous scroll: the Imperial Banquet in Wanshu Gardens in the Palace Museum, Beijing (see : Paintings by the Court Artists of the Qing Court, The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, pl. 37, p. 170).
