Lot no. 8
[GASTRONOMY] SCINA, Domenico (1764-1837). I frammenti della gastronomia di Archestrato. Palermo: Reale Stamperia, 1823.
Wide-margined copy of the first edition of this work attributed to the Greek philosopher Archestratus. Born in Gela, Sicily, around 330 BC and considered one of the earliest proponents of the art of pleasure and possibly a disciple of Epicurus, Archestratus authored the Hedypatheia'also known as The Gourmand's Poem'of which this volume offers a rare testimony. The surviving fragments recount his travels in search of the most refined dishes and finest wines, interspersed with reflections on simple foods such as bread, fish, and game.
