Lot no. 7
HOMER. Nausikaa. Translation by Leconte de Lisle. Paris, L'Édition d'art, H. Piazza et Cie, 1899. In-4, havana half-maroquin with corners, cold filets, spine decorated, gilt head, lining and endpapers imitating a moiré fabric with plant decoration, untrimmed, cover (Garidel). Edition of the sixth canto of the Odyssey decorated with 52 colour compositions by Gaston de Latenay, including 23 full-page and two on the cover, wood-engraved by Ruckert and delicately stencilled.
Edition of 400 copies, this one of 300 on Vosges vellum, offered to Monsieur Vaillant with a handwritten letter signed by the publishers.
Splendid illustration, perhaps the most emblematic of Symbolism: "The immobility and static archelogical style of the poetry are matched by the pale, cool, lyrical coloring and formalized linear style of the illustrations - landscapes with classical figures rhythmically disposed" (The Turn of the Century, n°70).
Spine faded, hinges split, head board detached.
Carteret Illustrés, IV, p. 235.
